In Language Arts, we completed our first Morning Message while correcting teacher mistakes. The class thought this was really fun and ended up finding 19 spelling errors, missing capital letters and punctuation. After we finished finding all of the mistakes, we used the number 19 and played "How Many Ways". The students filled the whiteboard with math equations, all with an answer of 19.
We also read a few short stories together from our new Collections book, "Spreading Our Wings". We will read from this series a few times a week. Having the students read out loud to the class is important to build confidence, fluency and work on expression.
We worked through the first "Making Words" activity. Students were given the letters...e, e, a, h, c, r, and t. They were asked to begin making 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6 letter words. After making smaller words with these letters, the students figured out that the "Mystery Word" was teacher!
We began something that every student in 3B was looking forward to...CURSIVE WRITING. Every Friday we will learn a new letter. This week we learned how to write the letter Aa.
Every Friday, your child will also be writing about their week in the "Back and Forth" Journal. These will come home so that you can read about what they were busy doing throughout the week. There is a place at the bottom of each page for you to respond. They are quite excited that their parents have homework!!!
In Math, we started our first unit, "Patterns". We read the book Ready or Not, Here I Come! It talked about patterns using skip counting. This week we worked on understanding increasing patterns. We used manipulatives to describe and extend patterns.
The students took home their first POW (Problem of the Week). This problem should be completed and brought back to school before Friday so that we can go over it in class together and they can put the new POW in their duotang for the next week.
We started our "Rocks and Minerals" unit in Science. To kick off the unit we made a KWL chart (K- What we KNOW, W-What we WANT to know, L-What we learned). This week we shared all of the things we KNOW about rocks and minerals. Then we worked on our title page. Next week we will be taking a walking trip down to the river valley to collect rock samples for some experiments and investigation that will take place throughout our unit.
In Social, we started working through our duotang and discussed the differences between a map and globe. We also talked about the north pole, south pole and equator.
In Art, we started a project that will continue next week. The class worked hard to paint their masterpiece, using the colours of the rainbow. Next week, they will be adding words to describe themselves.
The students now have their Grade 3 accounts set up on the Chrome Books. They were excited to finally get onto the computers. We will be using these on a daily basis for a variety of activities in all subject areas.
Have a wonderful weekend and enjoy the beautiful weather!!!
