Peru Day

Wow! What a feast we had! A HUGE thank you to Mrs. Ott for purchasing and preparing ALL the food for the grade 3 classes to enjoy for Peru Day! Thank you also to Mrs. Donofrio for helping!

We also painted our Peruvian masks!

For Math this week, we talked about prisms and pyramids. The students used 3D models to discuss and record the number of bases, faces, vertices and edges.
Pyramids have one base and triangular faces. A prism has 2 matching bases that are polygons. The rest of the faces are rectangles.

We also discussed cylinders, cones, spheres and cubes.

The students discussed how these shapes were the same and how they were different. They compared the faces, vertices and edges and recorded them in their flip books. They then went on to sort all of these geometric 3D objects by their attributes.

They were asked to build 3-D shapes using toothpicks and clay. They presented their shapes to the class by naming their shape and telling us how many edges and vertices it had.

Our last Math unit of the year is "Statistics and Probability". We started a new booklet called...My Data Diary to plan our snacks for the movie day next week. Our first question was, "What is your favourite kind of drink?" The class collected first hand data and organized it using a tally chart. Then they used this information to create a bar graph. The results showed that rootbeer is the most popular movie drink. Our second question was, "What are your favourite kind of chips?" The results of this survey showed that Doritos are the most popular. Next week we will decide on candy and popcorn flavour.

Our Social "suitcases" are finished and the presentations were very informative.

In Art, we worked on a project called, "I'm FLIPPING OUT over summer because...".  We used watercolour paints to make a beach background. Then, using scrapbook paper, we made a pair of flip flops for our beach. Our writing piece included all of the things we are looking forward to this summer!

On Friday, we set our butterfly free.

Congratulations to our new "Student of the Week"!

Being a Global Citizen....

This week we talked about how we share the world. We share the water, the land and the air. We decided that as global citizens, we could tackle the school yard. We decided to plant the front flower box, with flowers that Independent has donated to us. We also walked around the school yard and picked up garbage. On Friday, we designed, built and hung bird feeders in the trees around the school.

We started swimming this week for gym class. The students had a blast splashing around in the water!

Math was very busy this week. We worked on understanding the perimeter of regular and irregular shapes. Students were busy measuring metres and recording the perimeter of different objects around our room.

We also constructed different shapes for a given perimeter to show that there are many possible shapes with the same distance around.

We finished our Measurement unit learning about mass. Students were able to estimate, measure and record the mass of different objects.
1000 cm cubes weigh 1 kg
1 cm cube weighs 1 g
Students estimated mass by using referents. We talked about 1 kg being about the same weight as our math text book or a box of cereal. We also discussed 1g to be about the weight of a Skittle, Smartie or jellybean.

We tried to find objects around the classroom that weighed the same as our 1 kg bag of oats.
We began our new unit of Geometry. We talked about polygons and how they have straight sides that are joined. We used geoboards to create various shapes with varying sides. We made polygons with 3 sides (triangle), 4 sides (quadrilateral), 5 sides (pentagon), 6 sides (hexagon) and 8 sides (octagon).

We also worked on sorting polygons according to a sorting rule. One example the students used was...Polygons with 5 sides (pentagons) and polygons with 3 sides (triangles). They came up with a variety of other rules as well.

We finished reading "Charlotte's Web". Please review with your child some of the new vocabulary words we have learned during our novel study.

We presented another Readers Theatre. Rafunzel and The Ugly Woodpecker. The students loved presenting and have worked hard on their expression.

We completed our science Life Cycle slide shows and presented them to the class this week. The students did an awesome job and loved being a "teacher"!

For Art this week, we made bird feeders to go along with our focus of Global Citizenship! The feeders were painted and hung in the trees around the school yard.

EXCITING CHANGES!!! A butterfly has emerged!

Congratulations to our new Student of the Week!

LAST WEEK!
